The early embryological development of the fetal and permanent adrenal cortex in man

Abstract: This paper preseiits observations on the development of the huinaii adrenal cortex from its iiiceptioii until the embryo has grow11 to a leiigtli of 20 mni. Special attention has been given to the genesis of the permanent (true) cortex and its relationship to the fetal cortex.

“…Morphological studies have led to three different models. First, the adult zone may derive from the coelomic epithelia after cells that form the fetal zone have migrated (33); alternatively, the fetal and adult zones may derive simultaneously from discrete populations of coelomic epithelial cells (3). Both of these models postulate that the cells comprising the fetal and adult zones are already determined in their cell fates when they develop from the coelomic epithelia.…”

“…These studies speculated that the adrenal cortex originates from the dorsal coelomic epithelia lying between the dorsal mesentery and the developing urogenital ridge (Pankratz 1931;Uotila 1940), the underlying mesenchymal cells (Roos 1966), or both the epithelial and the mesenchymal cells (Gruenwald 1942a). The cell populations in similar regions were also presumed to be the blastemas for the gonads (Whitehead 1904;Fischel 1930;Gruenwald 1942a,b;Torry 1945;Zamboni & Upandhyay 1982;Satoh 1985;Byskov 1986).…”

“…The original observations of the Polish students were confirmed in 1911 by Elliot and Armour [30]. Out of the earlier reports on the subject, publications of Keene and Hewer [31], Tobeck [32], Uotila [33], Swinyard [17], Velican [34], [35], Lantan [36,37] and Wo³ynska [38] should be mentioned. All of them provided detailed cytological descriptions of developing adrenal gland.…”
