The early diagnostic value of serum neopterin and cartilage oligomeric matrix protein for osteoarticular changes among brucellosis patients at an early period

Abstract: BackgroundBrucellosis is an important public health problem in China. Brucellosis can cause many osteoarticular changes, especially chronic brucellosis. Brucellosis presents various diagnostic difficulties because it mimics many other diseases. Because of the poor sensitivity and ability of X-ray image, it is necessary to find a good method of early diagnosis for osteoarticular changes among brucellosis patients at an early period. The aim of this study was to find early changes biomarkers for osteoarticular ch… Show more

“…15 Brucellosis epidemics have been reported in 32 provinces (autonomous regions) in mainland China. 12 It is classified as a class B statutory infectious disease in China 3 and is considered a public health problem endangering health and property in China. [15][16][17] Early warning is important for controlling or reducing the risk of infectious disease outbreaks, and it is therefore vital to ensure the accuracy of Brucellosis predictions.…”

“…The monitoring of the serological Nep may be helpful for the prediction of the death risk from acute pancreatitis [ 100 ]. The Nep level may be a biomarker for osteoarticular changes of human brucellosis at an early stage [ 101 ]. The C-reactive protein and Nep serum levels are significantly higher in patients with gastric intestinal metaplasia and gastric atrophy: the best cut-off value to differentiate between patients with metaplasia and/or atrophy from controls was ≥10.15 nM for the Nep levels and ≥1.95 mg l −1 for the C-reactive protein levels [ 102 ].…”

“…In human brucellosis, it would seem that abnormal musculoskeletal changes are present during the early stage despite changes being undetectable via radiography. While a few studies have identified serum cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) and C-terminal telopeptide of type II collagen (CTX-II) as biomarkers that are associated with brucellosis-induced musculoskeletal changes 11 , 12 , there is still a need to identify potential bone markers that can identify early changes and aid in an early diagnosis. When assessing osteoarthritis (OA), commonly utilized biomarkers include pyridinoline (PYD), type II collagen cleavage neoepitope (C2C), and osteocalcin (OC).…”
