The earliest Panamanian pottery: Reconstructing production and distribution of Monagrillo ceramics through petrographic provenance analysis

Abstract: Monagrillo pottery (ca. 4500‐3200 14C yr B.P.) is the earliest in Panama and one of the first ceramics in the New World. It is found in two distinct site types: (1) shell‐bearing middens of the northeastern Azuero Peninsula and (2) rock shelters of the Pacific plains, foothils, and cordillera, and the Caribbean slopes of central Panama. Here, I present a study that sources Monagrillo ceramics using petrography to distinguish locally produced from transported wares. Results indicate that ceramics were mainly pr… Show more

“…Three complete and four fragments of stemmed bifacial points were excavated from the earliest deposits (Figure 2m). The points are triangular in shape, have expanding stems and indented bases, and some have basal thinning or flutes on one face (Iceland and Hirth 2021;Scheffler 2008;Scheffler et al 2012), and fit well with the broad regional pattern of stemmed and barbed triangular points dating to this period (Ranere and Cooke 2021). Bifacial points are absent from strata younger than 7040 cal b.c.…”

“…Currently available data suggest that this shift to staple consumption of maize happened 800 years prior to the first documented settlers (Iceland and Hirth 2021) and communities in the Maya lowlands (Castellanos and Foias 2017;Inomata et al 2020). This may indicate that while early farmers of maize (around 2050-3200 b.c.)…”
