The earliest modern humans outside Africa

Abstract: To date, the earliest modern human fossils found outside of Africa are dated to around 90,000 to 120,000 years ago at the Levantine sites of Skhul and Qafzeh. A maxilla and associated dentition recently discovered at Misliya Cave, Israel, was dated to 177,000 to 194,000 years ago, suggesting that members of the clade left Africa earlier than previously thought. This finding changes our view on modern human dispersal and is consistent with recent genetic studies, which have posited the possibility of an earlier… Show more

“…Later and more definite members of the modern human lineage have been confirmed in the form of the Omo Kibish 1 skeleton (Ethiopia), now more soundly dated to ~195 ka (McDougall et al ., ; Aubert et al ., ; Brown et al ., ), and three individuals, also from Ethiopia, discovered at Herto and dated to ~160 ka (White et al ., ; McCarthy and Lucas, ). Lastly, part of a H. sapiens upper jaw from Misliya, Israel, has been dated to ~180 ka, demonstrating that the sapiens lineage already extended beyond the African continent before the end of the Middle Pleistocene (Hershkovitz et al ., ). Recently, an even earlier (>200 ka) record of H. sapiens has been claimed from a partial cranium discovered in Apidima Cave, Greece (Harvarti et al, 2019).…”

“…The evolution and global dispersal of hominins was relatively recent and rapid. Predatory, fire-using hominins inhabited Africa and Eurasia roughly a million years before anatomically modern humans evolved and then dispersed out of Africa approximately 200 ka (Bae, Douka, & Petraglia, 2017;Hershkovitz et al, 2018). Homo sapiens reached Australia 50-45 ka (Wroe et al, 2013), colonized northern Eurasia after 45 ka (Bae et al, 2017), crossed from Siberia into North America 20-15 ka (Moreno-Mayar et al, 2018), and spread across North and South America before 12 ka (Meltzer, 2015).…”

“…Evidence of MC in Europe during the Upper Paleolithic era (38 000‐11 000 BCE) was found in portable art and rock art at that time . It was suggested that the practice of MC may have accompanied the radiation of Homo sapiens out of Africa ∼220 000 years ago . It has further been suggested that privation and other forces explain why MC subsequently ceased in some cultures .…”
