The dynamics of robbery and violence hot spots

Abstract: This paper examines how hot spots shift by hour of day and day of week. Hot spot analysis is more likely to have a substantial impact on crime patterns if spatiotemporal shifts are incorporated into the crime analysis process. Even in some of the highest crime neighborhoods in Bronx County (NY), not all micro-level geographies (e.g. street segments and property lots) contain substantial (if any) amounts of crime over the 5-year study period. Moreover, while there are 168 h in a week, even the hottest hot spots… Show more

“…In any case, it is known that higher alcohol doses produce an increase in the risk of aggression , so it is logical that even if the majority of people who drink do so relatively early in the evening, the peak time of (alcohol‐related) assaults occur later at night, when the levels of intoxication, and thereby also aggressive responses to impulses, increase. The results that both intoxication and assaults most often occur late at night and on weekends match previous results .…”

“…Alcohol use, or rather intoxication, is strongly linked to various violent crimes and is involved in many other types of injuries and disturbances as well . Alcohol‐fuelled disturbances often occur late at night , when levels of intoxication, fatigue and irritation are high, especially at the closing time of bars when people need to return home and many of them are lining up for buses, taxis or a night‐time snack. In addition to the night‐time hours, weekends also more generally have been found to be a time of more frequent instances of both intoxication and of alcohol‐related injuries and violence .…”

“…Hence, studying how crimes distribute across space and time is vital for the PNP to control crimes in Ozamiz City. The data of spatiotemporal pattern of robbery and violence crimes at the micro-level for example could be very beneficial for the police force when developing and implementing crime prevention and control initiatives (Herrmann, 2015).…”

“…Additionally, the author did use geographic visualizations to show which areas experienced more instances of particular crimes. Herrmann (2015) used New York City violent crime data and noted that hotspots shifted spatially over time [5]. This adds complexity to the issue and highlights the need for visual analysis over both space and time.…”
