The Dynamics of Quark-Gluon Plasma and AdS/CFT

Abstract: In this talk we first discuss the motivation for using the AdS/CFT correspondence as a tool for the understanding of real-time dynamics of quark-gluon plasma. After describing the effective dual degrees of freedom for a strongly coupled gauge theory system, we review the subsequent theoretical 'layers' in the physics of quark-gluon plasma: a uniform plasma at fixed temperature, linearized fluctuations, nonlinear hydrodynamic behaviour and finally some aspects of addressing non-equilibrium physics. The discussi… Show more

“…In recent years this has received an extra boost due to the growing interest in using holography as a tool to study strong coupling physics of potential relevance to phenomenology such as holographic QCD, quark-gluon plasma physics, far from equilibrium dynamics, thermalization, high-T c superconductors and many other condensed matter systems (see [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] for reviews). Apart from the obvious phenomenological interest, this development provides a field theory inspired guidance to look for interesting problems on the gravitational side of the duality.…”

“…Boost-invariant expanding N = 4 SU(N ) plasmas out of equilibrium can however be described by the time-dependent background found in [4] (see [32,33] for a review). In the following we review the basic features of this background and discuss the embedding of probe D7 branes dual to quenched flavours ("quarks") in the plasma.…”
