The dynamics of link formation in patent innovator networks

Abstract: The paper presents a simple extension of the Barabasi-Albert model of network evolution. This model is based upon the assumption that new links are formed not only according to the centrality of other nodes in a network but geodetic distance is also important in link formation. Simulation results show that if link formation is based on distance then the resulting network is more clustered than in the case of centrality being the dominant factor in link formation. Our empirical results show that in European reg… Show more

“…An important role is also played by research and development (R&D), and by sharing the knowledge. It is obvious, according to diff erent points of view on innovations and innovation process and their defi nitions that innovations could be seen as an interactive process that requires creation of interactions among diff erent participant of a given process (Sebestyen & Parag, 2010;Tudor, 2010). According to Nazarova (2009) one of the reasons of insuffi cient institutional development of innovative enterprises is the absence of a developed infrastructure which maintains innovative processes.…”

“… w ij is an element of a spatial weight matrix. Distance affects CSR (Cerqueti & Ventura, 2015; Sebestyen et al, 2010). Here, we adopt the inverse distance spatial weight matrix: the larger the distance between two companies, the lighter the weight.…”
