The Dynamics of Frequency-Specific, Depth-Sensing Indentation Testing

Abstract: Depth-sensing indentation involves applying a specific force-time history on a rigid indenter while continuously monitoring the displacement of the indenter into the surface. Frequency specific depth-sensing indentation testing entails adding a small harmonic force on the indenter and measuring the harmonic response of the indenter at the excitation frequency. While often taken for granted, understanding the dynamics behind these frequency specific measurements is of vital importance in the determination of qu… Show more

“…A number of authors [240][241][242][243][244][245][246][247] have in recent years proposed experimental hardware and analysis procedures for determining the storage and loss modulus from instrumented indentation experiments using, for example, DMA, nanoindenters, or atomic force microscope with controlled oscillatory loads or displacements. Taking the advantage of the high lateral resolution, many of these techniques allow mapping of storage and loss modulus.…”

Как следствие, при этом происходит сканирование твердости по глубине отпечатка в единственном испытании, что заменяет целую серию испытаний методом традицион-ного NI [7,38,39]. 3.…”

“…However, for soft compliant materials (like polymers and biological tissues), the rate of increase in load and contact stiffness is often too small to allow for accurate surface identification. In these situations, a better method is sometimes offered by dynamic stiffness measurement (Pethica et al, 1989;Lucas et al, 1998).…”
