Simulation-Based Participatory Modelling in Urban and Production Logistics: A Review on Advances and Trends

Simulation-based participatory modelling allows integration of all types of knowledge including empirical, technical and scientific from all disciplines and domains. Thus, in recent years, the use of participatory modelling has been continuously increasing in many fields including logistics. With a view of achieving better understanding of the subject, this article systematically reviews the advances made in participatory modelling in the field of urban and production logistics in the last decade. It further reports the findings transparently following a categorization based on (i) the purpose of participatory modelling in the domain, and (ii) depending on the purpose how data is collected, processed and outcomes are presented. The review resulted in 97 articles which were analysed and categorized based on the above two questions formulated in the literature surveyed. The review revealed that apart from the three existing categories of purposes, namely, reflexive, descriptive and normative there is an emerging fourth category that was analytical in nature and 15 out of 97 articles analyzed belonged to this category. The authors decided to call this category analytical field empirical modelling which is primarily based on mathematical modelling and use of computational methods. We present these results with the help of a categorization. During the analysis for the second research question, we discovered that though the conventional ways of data collection and processing, such as interviews and workshops, which remain significantly present, in electronic data crowdsourcing and data processing via computational methods are emerging.

The 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) represent a holistic and ambitious agenda for transforming the world towards societal well-being, economic prosperity, and environmental protection. Achieving the SDGs is, however, challenged by the performance of interconnected sectors and the complexity of their interactions which drive non-linear system responses, tipping points, and spillover effects in progress towards sustainability. Systems modelling, as an integrated way of thinking about and modelling multisectoral dynamics, can help explain how feedback interactions within and among different sectors can lead to broader system transformation and progress towards the SDGs. Here, we review how system dynamics, as one of prominent systems modelling approaches, can inform and contribute to sustainability research and implementation, framed by the SDGs. We systematically analyse 357 system dynamics studies undertaken at the local scale (e.g., communities, cities), published between 2015 (i.e., inception of the SDGs) and 2020. We analyse the studies to illuminate strengths and limitations in four key areas: diversity of scope; interdisciplinarity of the approaches; the role of stakeholder participation; and the analysis of SDG interactions. We assess strengths and limitations of the reviewed literature, and propose related research priorities in four areas: better consideration of societal aspects of sustainable development in modelling efforts; integrating with new interdisciplinary methods; improving genuine stakeholder engagement; a more in-depth analysis of feedback interactions underlaying the SDGs (i.e., synergies and trade-offs). The review provides a comprehensive knowledge base of existing works that can guide future applications and set a new research agenda for filling existing gaps in the application of systems modelling to sustainability.

Understanding of consumer behavior, their changing demands due to increase in social interactions and communications, adoption of latest technologies over existing products have always been a set of fundamental activities for the firms. Keeping the objective of minimum process disruptions and discouraging product proliferation, firms always endeavor to match heterogeneous demands of consumers by emphasizing on the product line. Also, with globalization, rivalry amongst firms has reached a next level. Brands are trying to capture the market by coming up with various combinations of new product mix. Amongst various attributes of product mix, product line has helped firms to attract new potential buyers to a significantly good extent. Therefore, in today’s cutthroat competitive scenario, the concept of product line provides an opportunity for a firm to provide same kind of products with some variation at an altered pricing. The objective of this study is to understand how customers behave (with so many options) and deviate from one product to another product (within and outside the brand). All the possible customers’ shifting combinations that might impact the overall sales of product are captured through the proposed model. A mathematical innovation diffusion model is developed that is motivated by the concept of Bass model and multiple generational diffusion models. This modelling framework describes the scenario of competitive brands that offer multiple products in a marketplace and observing the shifting behavior of the customers and predict the sales when product lines are available. Validation of the model has been done on real-life sales data sets for automobiles industries of two different brands i.e., Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki. The importance of this study is to deliver a solution to the manufacturers that how consumer shifts from one brand to another brand. Therefore, it is imperative for the companies to develop such a product that would lead to customers’ loyalty towards the brand.
