The dynamics of dairy land use change with respect to the milk quota regime

Abstract: This paper analyses the sequence of changes in land used for milk production on dairy farms in the period before, during, and towards the abolishment of milk quotas. Using a unique dataset comprising farm level data of the Netherlands between 1971 and 2011 we estimate two duration models, analysing the time period between changes in case of increases and decreases in dairy land use. The impact of milk quota, socio-economic and production variables on the likelihood of a farm changing his land use are assessed.… Show more

Moreover, in the absence of quota, land is the most scarce production factor, hence increasing dairy cow numbers on an existing land base is a common expansion strategy in both countries (Boere et al ., ; Läpple et al ., ). “…Dutch dairy farms are the most regulated farm type and are subject to frequent policy changes, such as obligatory manure processing and the abolition of the milk quota system (Boere et al, 2015;Jongeneel et al, 2010;Samson, Gardebroek and Jongeneel, 2017). These regulations and policy changes may increase the need for cash, either to comply with the regulations or to expand to meet the expected increase in milk demand after the abolition of the quota.…”
