A definitive version was subsequently published in Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, 108-109 (1) Ce (x) Zr (1-x) O 2 catalysts with various Ce / Zr contents were studied using Raman spectroscopy under different gaseous atmospheres, at different temperatures and in the presence of a model soot.Catalysts with high concentrations of Zr fluoresced at elevated temperatures making analysis of their spectra impossible. This effect became even more pronounced at higher temperatures. CeO 2 and solid solutions with relatively low concentrations of Zr showed a red shift and a decrease in intensity of the characteristic F 2g peak at high temperatures under different atmospheres. The magnitude of the latter effect was higher under reducing atmospheres. These changes are reversible upon cooling, showing that they relate to a lattice expansion effect rather than any major chemical change to the material. In the presence of the model soot the Raman spectra of all materials was much decreased due to the absorption of the incident and scattered radiation by the soot particles. The presence of soot does not change the relative intensities or positions of the peaks in the spectra of the solid solutions. Evidence is shown for the production of a Ce 3+ -CO species following interaction between the soot and the surface at high temperature in an inert atmosphere.

A series of CuO/CeO 2 catalysts were prepared through a two-step process: (1) CeO 2 supports were firstly prepared by precipitation (P), hydrothermal (HT) and solgel (SG) methods, respectively; and (2) CuO was deposited on the above CeO 2 supports by deposition-precipitation method. The as-synthesized CeO 2 supports and CuO/CeO 2 catalysts were characterized by N 2 -physisorption, XRD, XPS, Raman, and H 2 -TPR. The CuO/CeO 2 catalysts were examined with respect to their catalytic activity for the water-gas shift reaction, and their catalytic activities are ranked as: CuO/CeO 2 -P [ CuO/CeO 2 -HT [ CuO/CeO 2 -SG. The results suggest that the CeO 2 prepared by precipitation (i.e., CeO 2 -P-300) has the best thermal stability and the most amounts of surface oxygen vacancies, which make the corresponding CuO/CeO 2 -P catalyst present the largest pore volume, the smallest crystal size of CuO, the highest microstrain (i.e., the highest surface energy) and the most amounts of active sites (i.e., the moderate copper oxide (crystalline) interacted with surface oxygen vacancies of ceria). Therefore, the catalytic activity of CuO/ CeO 2 catalysts, in nature, depends on the thermal stability and the number of surface oxygen vacancies of the CeO 2 supports previously prepared by different methods.

Recently, the strong chemical interaction between Ni and GDC (Gd 2 O 3 −CeO 2 ) was reported for the cermet anode of Ni−GDC in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs); 1 CeO 2 species migrated on the Ni surface after exposure to the reducing atmosphere. This surface modification of nickel affected the catalytic properties for carbon deposition and CO adsorption. Generally, such a chemical interaction is promoted by the oxidation-reduction (redox) treatment. In this study, then, the influence of redox treatment on catalytic and electrochemical properties of Ni-GDC cermets was investigated in detail to establish a new design concept of anodes. The Ni−GDC cermet subjected to the redox treatment showed high tolerance to carbon deposition. Furthermore, the redox treatment did not affect the mechanism of electrochemical hydrogen oxidation in humidified hydrogen atmospheres. We also demonstrated the stable power generation of the single cell employing the optimized Ni−GDC anode at 1000 • C in a wet methane atmosphere with a steam to carbon ratio of 0.1.
