The dynamic surface chemistry during the interaction of CO with ceria captured by Raman spectroscopy

Abstract: The interaction of CO with ceria under conditions typically used to measure the oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of automotive three way catalysts (TWC) has been investigated by in situ Raman spectroscopy. During exposure of the ceria to CO at 623 K vibrational bands at 1582-1600 and 1331-1340 cm )1 appeared; these bands increased with increasing time of exposure to CO. The band positions are consistent with phonon modes of carbon; however, assignment to carboxylate species or carbonate species cannot be excluded… Show more

“…This peak is not present in oxidized Ce 0.8 Zr 0.2 O 2 . Peaks in this spectral region have previously been noted by several authors [31][32][49][50] and are specific to reduced CeO 2 samples. Swanson and co-workers have assigned the species as a Ce 3+ -CO vibration.…”

“…4a-c), the Raman spectra show a strong peak at about 461 cm -1 in all cases, which corresponds to the triply degenerate F 2g mode and can be viewed as a symmetric breathing mode of the oxygen atoms around cerium ions [37]. Furthermore, the Raman spectra of CeO 2 also exhibit another three weak bands at around 270, 600 and 1,170 cm -1 , which are attributed to the doubly degenerate TO mode, the nondegenerate LO mode and the combination of A 1g , E g and F 2g modes, respectively [38,39]. From Fig.…”

“…5, when the reduced ceria is located on the catalyst surface, the progress of carbon deposition due to the CO disproportionation reaction is concerned at lower temperature. [36][37][38] However, the deposited amount of carbon on Ni-GDC-1000 was less than 0.04 mg carbon /mg catalyst during 10 min of exposure to 20% CO-80% N 2 at 500-800…”
