The dusty heart of nearby active galaxies

Abstract: In a series of papers, we aim at stepping towards characterizing physical properties of the AGN dust torus by combining IR highspatial resolution observations with 3D clumpy torus models. In this first paper, we present mid-IR imaging and 8−13 μm lowresolution spectroscopy of nine type 1 and ten type 2 AGN. The observations were carried out with the VLT/VISIR mid-IR imager and spectrograph and can be considered the largest currently available mid-infrared spectro-photometric data set of AGN at spatial resoluti… Show more

“…These wavelengths should be mainly unaffected by the 10 μm silicate feature -at least at typically observed strengths (e.g. Mason et al 2006Mason et al , 2009Horst et al 2008;Hönig et al 2010). As in the previous figures, we present increasing N 0 from 2.5 to 10 in the columns from left to right.…”

“…Shi et al 2006). We note, however, that radiative transfer effects can affect the exact shape of the feature (but see discussions in Nikutta et al 2009;Hönig et al 2010;Landt et al 2010, which disagree on the details of this effect).…”

“…For NGC 7674, R sub is estimated to be ≈ 0.1 +0.05 −0.04 pc based upon infrared luminosity scaling relations determined at high angular resolution where the AGN can be effectively isolated from surrounding star formation (Hönig et al 2010). This size scale is about 30 times smaller than the lower limit on R above.…”

“…The flux densities of the two observed objects are determined using the VISIR photometry package by Hönig et al (2010). For photometry, the science targets can be considered as point sources such that each science and calibrator beam is fitted by a two-dimensional Gaussian.…”
