Several instruments have been developed by clinicians and academics to assess clinical recovery. Based on their life narratives, measurement tools have also been developed and validated through participatory research programs by persons living with mental health problems or illnesses to assess personal recovery. The main objective of this project is to explore possible correlations between clinical recovery, personal recovery, and citizenship by using patient-reported outcome measures. All study participants are currently being treated and monitored after having been diagnosed either with (a) psychotic disorders or (b) anxiety and mood disorders. They have completed questionnaires for clinical evaluation purposes (clinical recovery) will further complete the Recovery Assessment Scale and Citizenship Measure (personal-civic recovery composite index). Descriptive and statistical analyses will be performed to determine internal consistency for each of the subscales, and assess convergent-concurrent validity between clinical recovery, citizenship and personal recovery. Recovery-oriented mental health care and services are particularly recognizable by the presence of Peer Support Workers, who are persons with lived experience of recovery. Upon training, they can personify personalized mental health care and services, that is to say services that are centered on the person’s recovery project and not only on their symptoms. Data from our overall research strategy will lay the ground for the evaluation of the effects of the intervention of Peer Support Workers on clinical recovery, citizenship and personal recovery.

Studies have reported that exposure to pet therapy (PT) can reduce physiological and subjective stress and anxiety levels. The aim of this meta-analysis is to examine the efficacy of PT as a method for reducing physiological stress levels (blood pressure and heart rate) and subjective stress and anxiety scores (self-reported stress/anxiety). Further, we examined the effects of sample characteristics and modifications to the PT (different age groups and health status of participants across samples, whether a stressor was present, and individual versus group PT) as potential moderators of the relationship between PT and stress reactivity. Our searches incorporated articles published from May 2017 and earlier in PsycINFO, MEDLINE, and PubMed. This meta-analysis included 28 articles with 34 independent samples and contained a total of 1,310 participants. Using a random effects model, we determined that significant differences occurred in heart rate, self-reported anxiety, and self-reported stress after PT exposure compared with before PT. However, we did not detect significant differences in blood pressure after PT. Sample characteristics and modifications to the PT significantly moderated the effect of PT on stress responses. Our results suggest that PT can be an effective program for reducing stress reactivity.

ObjectivesTo determine whether studying aetiological pathways of depression, in particular the well-established determinant of childhood trauma, only in a specialised mental healthcare setting can yield biased estimates of the aetiological association, given that the majority of individuals are treated in primary care settings.Design and settingTwo databanks were used in this study. The Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) on Mental Health and Well-Being 2012 is a national survey about mental health of adult Canadians. It measured common mental disorders and utilisation of services. The Signature mental health biobank includes adults from the Island of Montreal recruited at the emergency department of a major university mental health centre. After consent, participants filled standardised psychosocial questionnaires, gave blood samples, and their clinical diagnosis was recorded. We compared the cohort of depressed individuals from CCHS and Signature in contact with specialised services with those in contact with primary care or not in treatment.ParticipantsThere were 860 participants with depression in the CCHS and 207 participants with depression in the Signature Bank.Primary and secondary outcomesThe Childhood Experiences of Violence Questionnaire was used to measure childhood trauma in both settings. Childhood trauma is associated with depression as with other common mental and physical disorders.ResultsIndividuals with depression in the CCHS who reported having been hospitalised for psychiatric treatment or having seen a psychiatrist or those from Signature were found to be more strongly associated with childhood abuse than individuals with depression who were treated in primary care settings or did not seek mental healthcare in the preceding year.ConclusionsBerkson’s bias limits the generalisability of aetiological associations observed in such university-hospital-based biobanks, but the problem can be remedied by broadening recruitment to primary care settings and the general population.
