The drying of solids in a modified fluidized bed

Abstract: -When fine and cohesive particles are the subject of study, fluid beds are of concern of due to the formation of channeling. This work presents a study that was carried out on the drying of fine particles, in this case a crystalline organic acid, in a mechanically stirred fluidized bed. The drying kinetics curves were determined by evaluating the influences of initial moisture content and temperature of the drying gas at the entrance of the bed. This study shows the suitability of the stirred fluidized bed for… Show more

“…Because of the large solid-gas contact surface and the mixing degree, the mass transfer rates are favoured by using fluidized bed dryers (Touil 2017). The main parameters to be considered by this technology are the gas temperature, pressure, flow and particle size (Ambrosio and Taranto 2002;Touil 2017).…”

“…The granule will also exhibit channelling when fluidized [1]. To improve the fluidity of cohesive powders, researchers have proposed several techniques including mechanical vibration [2][3][4][5]7], bed stirring [4,6,7] and gas pulsation [8,9]. However, the pharmaceutical industry does not employ any of these assisting techniques to aid their granule fluidity during drying.…”

“…[3] In one, gas pulsation is generated by a butterfly valve, which is installed in the gas inlet duct and rotated at a specific angular velocity, while the others are based on relocation of the gas stream to the bottom of the bed. Relocation of the gas stream can be achieved by: (1) the use of a rotating distributor valve, which makes the gas stream sweep across specified chambers of a rectangular bed; [10,12,13] (2) the use of a perforated rotating disc located below the circular bed; [14][15][16] and (3) the use of a rotating slotted horizontal cylinder that directs the gas stream to different sections of the base of a circular bed. [17] The objectives of the present investigation were to study the fluid dynamics in beds of potato slices and the evaluation through statistical design of the effect of air velocity, air temperature, and rotating disk velocity that give the bed the pulsed effect during drying.…”
