The DREAMS Experiment Onboard the Schiaparelli Module of the ExoMars 2016 Mission: Design, Performances and Expected Results

Abstract: The first of the two missions foreseen in the ExoMars program was successfully launched on th March 2016. It included the Trace Gas Orbiter and the Schiaparelli Entry descent and landing Demonstrator Module. Schiaparelli hosted the DREAMS instrument suite that was the only scientific payload designed to operate after the touchdown. DREAMS is a meteorological station with the capability of measuring the electric properties of the Martian atmosphere. It was a completely autonomous instrument, relying on its inte… Show more

“…The technology of the Barocap ® is well known and it has previously flown in 6 missions, including MSL (REMS-P) and ExoMars 2016/Schiaparelli lander (DREAMS-P). MEDA PS design is very similar to REMS-P (Harri et al 2014a), inheriting some parts also from DREAMS-P (Esposito et al 2018).…”

“…Finally the module was provided with a sensor-suite aimed to characterize the atmospheric conditions at the surface called DREAMS (Dust Characterization, Risk Assessment, and Environment Analyser on the Martian Surface) [2] [8]. The suite comprised sensors to measure atmospheric temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction, illumination conditions and to provide the first measurements of electric fields at the Martian surface.…”

“…Starting from heritage of previous instrumentation flown in other in situ missions e.g. the Huygens HASI PWA (Permittivity, Wave and Altimetry) (Grard et al 2006) and the µARES experiment of the ExoMars Schiaparelli DREAMS environmental package (Esposito et al 2018) (Fig. 4), AEP should include a relaxation (RP), a Mutual Impedance (MI) probe and a passive E-field sensor (EF).…”
