The Downside of the Internet: Cheating and Technology in Higher Education

Abstract: Within student affairs and higher education, technology is consistently a major topic of discussion. When placed in the context of the work of Lawrence Kohlberg, a new perspective is added to this dialogue. This paper addresses the gap between perceived and actual realities regarding moral development and current technology in higher education. __________________________________________________________________________________

“…According to the data, female respondents exhibited much lower unethical perceptions compared to males, namely, cultural acceptability (M=3.93 vs M=6.06), traditional acceptability (M=3.97 vs M=6.27), and family acceptability (M=3.46 vs M=5.40), respectively. These results support Gismondi's (2006) findings, and indicate that females perceived the conduct of the manager as being more culturally and traditionally unacceptable and against family values than their male counterparts, thus suggesting that males have a lower awareness of ethics. As a result, male students tended to display a much lower “sensitivity” to issues which had cultural, traditional and family‐oriented implications.…”

“…That is, they indicated a higher ethical awareness than their male counterparts that such an action was based on self‐promotion and personal satisfaction. These findings are consistent with Gismondi (2006), and highlight the tendency of males to be more inclined to ignore moral values and to act for their own self‐interest.…”
