The diversification of species in crop rotation increases the profitability of grain production systems

Abstract: Crop rotation with species diversification contributes to the control of pests, diseases and weeds and improves soil fertility and conservation, which can lead to increased profitability in grain production systems. The objectives of this study were to determine whether grain production systems that employ crop rotation with species diversification are more productive and profitable than double-cropping rotations without diversification and to analyze the revenues and production costs of these cropping systems… Show more

“…This problem could even be exaggerated by the exogenous factors, as the adverse weather has a larger impact on the lower tail of the yield distribution compared with the upper tail (Chavas et al, 2019). Therefore, factors affecting efficiency and productivity, including factors, such as crop rotation and diversification of crops (Volsi et al, 2022), are also expected to affect the exit decision.…”

“…In Mississippi, soybean and corn are primarily produced crops in a 2‐year rotation, where canola might be a good fit as a potential double crop within this rotation. Adopting double cropping can benefit the soil health because both the crops (canola and soybean) have different nutrient requirements and rotating these crops can prevent nutrient depletion in soil (Volsi et al., 2022). Additionally, double cropping can increase the economic returns for farmers.…”

“…Crop rotation strategy implementation may reduce the fungal infestation to some extent. However, even this strategy reduced grain production ( Volsi et al., 2022 ). Various biocontrol agents like Trichoderma sp., Mycorrhizal fungi, and Pseudomonas fluorescens demonstrated antagonism toward Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium oxysporum .…”
