The Distribution Ratios of some Fatty Acids and their Halogen Derivatives between Water and Olive Oil

Abstract: Owing to technical limitations a high degree of accuracy in the titrations cannot be expected in very low concentrations. Accordingly, as described by Smith and White, aberrant values are eliminated by plotting the experimentally determined values of C0/N2 and 1 /N. Those values of C0/N2 are disregarded which are not consonant with the majority and a value of Ca/N2 chosen to serve as a basic term of the series from which to calculate the successive values of P.

“…Individual regions of phospholipid bilayers are difficult to access experimentally, especially in biological membranes. Various organic solvents, imitating the bilayers differing in lipid composition, packing, and hydration levels, have been examined as membrane or bilayer surrogates, with the objective of obtaining thermodynamic or kinetic information on the partitioning process. ,,,,, Curiously, air was also used as the surrogate phase imitating the nonpolar hydrocarbon core of the bilayer. The measurements of the surface pressure of chemicals at the air/water interface have been miniaturized and adapted for a high throughput .…”

“…After early experiments with loosely defined oils , , and other solvents, ,,,, the studies of Hansch and Fujita, as well as those of Leo et al, have established 1-octanol as a widely used bilayer-mimicking solvent. The authors, and many followers in the areas of QSAR and the design of bioactive compounds, intuitively considered hydrated 1-octanol to be a hydrocarbon core surrogate, despite its comparatively high equilibrium water content at room temperature (2.18 mol/L) .…”
