The Distribution in Man of Genetic Variants of 6-Phosphogluconate Dehydrogenase

Abstract: For the enzyme 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, a table is given of all available data on the distribution of isozyme phenotypes. The calculated frequencies of all but the commonest gene are also tabulated. The frequencies of the PGDC allele are plotted on a world map. Possible interpretations of the observations are discussed.

“…The frequency of the PGDC gene in the El-Kharga sample was found to be 5.5% while in El-Dakhla it was 6.2%. These values are similar to those of Arab Jordanians, Palestinians and those from South Arabia [Tills et al, 1971]. Similar African values for this gene are reported from Nigeria (6%) and Uganda (5%) while European values are lower, ranging between 2 and 3% [Tills et a!..…”

“…On the world distribution of 6-PGD variants in Man two exhaustive reviews [6,13] and a few other more recent reports [2,11,14], not included in the reviews, are available. Two kinds of variants have been described to date: those associated with a change in the electrophoretic behaviour of the functional molecule and those showing a change in its catalytic activity.…”
