The distribution and habitat preferences of the declining species Orobanche arenaria Borkh at the northern limit of its geographical range

Abstract: Three new sites of Orobanche arenaria were discovered during floristic investigations in the Wyżyna Małopolska upland in central Poland. The new localities are concentrated in the Ponidzie area (Garb Pińczowski ridge and Niecka Połaniecka basin) and form the northern limit of the geographical range of O. arenaria. The paper presents information on the distribution of Orobanche arenaria in Poland, the abundance at the sites and habitats occupied by the species

“…For instance, Artemisia campestris is practically the only host of P. arenaria (Piwowarczyk and Przemysky, 2010), Centaurea scabiosa is a host of O. elatior (Zázvorka 2010) and Orobanche ballotae A. Pujadas is strictly monophagous on Ballota hirsuta (Pujadas Salva 1997). We detected very low or no germination of non-weedy broomrapes induced by GR24.…”

“…Moreover, P. arenaria populations occupy usually open and relatively level areas sparsely vegetated in dry, alkaline and sandy soils on gently inclined slopes which facilitates the colonization of this group of bacteria. In addition, compared to other species of Orobanchaceae, this population in the studied area reached a small height of 8 to 20 cm [ 96 , 97 ].…”

“…The species is very rare in Poland, it has so far been confirmed or reported as occurring at only four localities: in Lower Silesia (Szczęśniak 2003) and in the Niecka Nidziańska basin (Piwowarczyk and Przemyski 2010). It was recorded at one locality in the Middle Vistula Gap in the study area (Fig.…”
