The distribution and frequency of Fusobacterium nucleatum subspecies in the human oral cavity

Abstract: Three reference strains of Fusobacterium nucleatum and 32 human oral isolates were compared by a variety of physiological tests, enzyme electrophoretic profiles, SDS-PAGE patterns, DNA base composition and hybridization to test their possible site specificity and frequency of the recently described subspecies of F. nucleatum. Nine of the 11 isolates assigned to F. nucleatum subspecies nucleatum were from diseased sites, whereas isolates from healthy sites were all identified as F. nucleatum subspecies polymorp… Show more

“…nucleatum was more prevalent in diseased sites, whereas isolates from healthy sites were generally identified as F. nucleatum subspp. polymorphum and fusiforme (Gharbia et al, 1990). However, another study did not detect any difference between healthy and diseased sites (Berres et al, 2003).…”

“…vincentii is genetically similar to F. nucleatum subsp. fusiforme (3,13,14,34). Considering these findings, these two subspecies can be classified into a single subspecies.…”

The difference in the isolation frequency of the subspecies of F. nucleatum from these studies may result from either host foods being consumed in various geographical ethnic groups, the detection methods for the subspecies, or the small sampling sizes employed.…”
