“…Unlike tropical species of anguillid that display little seasonality in recruitment of glass eels and silver‐eel migrations (Jellyman, ; Arai, ), temperate species show marked seasonality, with late summer and autumn migrations of silver eels being the norm (Haro, ; Tesch, ). Spring migrations of A. anguilla are known (Haro, ; Aarestrup et al, ), often from areas regulated by dams and canals (McCarthy et al, ; Bruijs & Durif, ).…”

“…Most of what is known about seasonality of spawning has been gathered about anguillid eels. Spawning seasons of temperate anguillids have been roughly estimated from the timing of the downstream migrations of silver eels into the ocean (Jellyman 2003;Tesch 2003) Kleckner and McCleave 1988;Tsukamoto 1992;Tsukamoto et al 2003). The timing of spawning of tropical anguillids is much less understood, however, even though seasonal differences have been observed in the presence or size of leptocephali in the central Indonesian Seas (Wouthuyzen et al 2009) and off west Sumatra in the eastern Indian Ocean (Jespersen 1942;Aoyama et al 2007).…”

“…Three of the six species, A. megastoma, A. marmorata, and A. obscura, are distributed along a belt of islands south of the equator in the WSP (Ege 1939;Beumer et al 1981;Allen 1991;Marquet and Galzin 1991). The others, A. reinhardtii and A. australis, are found mostly in New Caledonia, eastern Australia and New Zealand (Ege 1939;Beumer 1996;Jellyman et al 1996), while A. dieffenbachii is endemic in New Zealand (Ege 1939;Jellyman 2003).…”

“…There are six species of freshwater eels in the rivers and streams of the landmasses and islands of the western South Pacific Ocean (WSP), which include Anguilla megastoma, A. marmorata, A. reinhardtii, A. obscura, A. dieffenbachii, and A. australis (Jellyman 2003), but there have only been a few studies on their population structure. Each species has different geographic distributions, although their ranges all overlap in New Caledonia except for A. dieffenbachii.…”
