The Distinct Features of Hidden Champions in Germany: A Dynamic Capabilities View

Abstract: Hidden Champions (HCs) are firms unknown to the wider public, but global leaders in the niche markets they serve. This paper looks at distinctive features of these firms, focusing on their dynamic capabilities. Employing a unique data base on German firms, we identify a representative sample of German HCs. Based on a matching technique, we examine differences to other firms in terms of the firms' processes, position, and path. We find that HCs' competitive strategy rests on technology leadership and customisat… Show more

“…Innovation activities tend to be highly customer oriented and are often mostly in a doing, using and interacting mode(Jensen et al 2007), although many of these firms have cooperative R&D relationship with universities and other research organizations. (see for example,Audretsch and Lehmann 2016;Audretsch, Lehmann and Schenkenhofer 2018;Pahnke and Welter 2018;Rammer and Spielkamp 2019).…”

“…This is particularly apparent when considering that not only the neoliberal, ‘business‐friendly’ FDP but also the Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH) held partly similar positions (no joint liabilities, insolvency regime) in the past – without, however, demanding an outright dismantling of the EMU. Thus, the AfD and Die Familienunternehmer articulate concerns and interests of German SMEs, which – apart from the so‐called Hidden Champions (Rammer and Spielkamp 2019) – are predominantly oriented towards the domestic market (IfM 2021). As the role of the Euro as an international currency and the EMU's effect on Germany's REER are largely irrelevant for these capital fractions, these actors predominantly seek to minimise Germany's costs and liabilities in stabilising the EMU (cf.…”

“…Second, HCs have significant R&D capacity and activity to maintain this market position and use innovation as a long-term business success strategy, supported by strong research cooperation with universities (Venohr and Meyer 2007). Third, innovation is mainly conducted incrementally, emphasizing continuous improvement processes in close interaction with customers (Rammer and Spielkamp 2019). However, there is a research gap on digitalization-related R&D activity and innovation of HCs.…”

“…Digitalization also affects Hidden Champions (HCs) as highly innovative but little-known smalland medium-sized companies possessing market or technology leadership for specialized products. HCs have significant export shares in their niche segments and are required to cooperate with customers globally (Rammer and Spielkamp 2019). HCs are mainly active in manufacturing industries and have concentrated their innovation activities on incremental continuous process improvement, which deviates from digital modes of innovation (Simon 2009;.…”
