The Disputed Feeding Behaviour of a Paedophagous Haplochromine Cichlid (Pisces) Observed and Discussed

Abstract: Aquarium-observations on a new paedophagous haplochromine species (Pisces, Cichlidae) showed that engulfing the snout of a brooding female to extract the brood, is a possible technique of gathering food, as was suggested by GREENWOOD (1959, 1974). Considering morphological information from various authors (GREENWOOD, 1959, 1974; BAREL et al., 1976, 1977) and notwithstanding some doubt expressed by FRYER & ILES (1972) and FRYER (1977), this snout-engulfing may be a widespread technique among the "larger mou… Show more

“…Fish biology * We must quantify interactions among food-web structures, water quality, and life-history characteristics of fishes in order to understand the relationship between fish production and the causes of eutrophication and anoxia in Lake Victoria. as baby suckers, or paedophages (Wilhelm 1980). Paedophages are predators with large mouths, thick rubbery lips, and odd, stout, outward-pointed anterior teeth.…”

In East African cichlid fish radiations, spectacular trophic behaviours like head-ramming and snout-engulfing allow some species specialising on eggs or fry of heterospecific fishes (Wilhelm, 1980;Ribbink & Lewis, 1981;McKaye & Kocher, 1983;McKaye & van den Berghe, 1997;Ribbink & Ribbink, 1997;Ochi et al, 1999).…”

“…However, increased protection of the brood may come at a cost to the parent. The most obvious cost of mouth brooding is that the parent is limited partially or completely from food intake while carrying a brood (Wilhelm 1980). Any extended length of starvation while brooding can negatively impact the parent's growth and future fecundity (Smith and Wootton 1994;Smith and Wootton 1995).…”
