The Disease Severity and Clinical Outcomes of the SARS-CoV-2 Variants of Concern

Abstract: With the continuation of the pandemic, many severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants have appeared around the world. Owing to a possible risk of increasing the transmissibility of the virus, severity of the infected individuals, and the ability to escape the antibody produced by the vaccines, the four SARS-CoV-2 variants of Alpha (B.1.1.7), Beta (B.1.351), Gamma (P.1), and Delta (B.1.617.2) have attracted the most widespread attention. At present, there is a unified conclusion that… Show more

“…1). The ameliorating effect of the booster vaccine on Omicron BA.2 responses suggests that population immunity against BA.2 may be sufficient to prevent flooding of healthcare systems and high levels of mortality, seen before for previous variants [33][34][35] . In addition, the widespread circulation of BA.1 may lead to the broadening of the antibody response in previously infected or vaccinated individuals and subsequent dampening of the intensity of spread.…”

“…Furthermore, the relevance of SARS-CoV-2 variants in clinical outcomes has been addressed but results aren’t homogeneous across studies [ 11 , 12 ]. There could be several reasons for this, from sample size, genetic background of the population, comorbidities, available medical equipment and personnel, and the method employed for variant identification.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, there is no clear evidence that the P.1 variant resulted in greater or lesser severity of COVID-19 than pre-existing variants [10]. Nevertheless, the increase in transmissibility led to a significant increase in incidences locally [11].…”
