The direct determination of the current density and mu profiles of a spheromak

Abstract: We have used a probe containing both a Rogowski coil and a magnetic pick-up coil to measure both the current density and the fl value in the plasma of the SPHEX spheromak. The results are broadly in agreement with previous measurements but give much better spatial resolution; they reveal a discontinuity at the interface between the 'central column' and 'annulus' regions of the plasma. In the annulus, the range of values of fl spans the spheromak eigenvalue as expected from theory. When the spheromak current dr… Show more

“…Only spheromak operation is considered, since no data is available for gettered operation with the rod in place. Presented here are surveys within the equatorial plane using an insertable probe called the probe, 8 consisting of three orthogonal field coils together with a small Rogowski coil which measure the value of at any one point in the machine during a shot. The probe was rotated such that it was aligned to the local mean field, thereby measuring J ʈ , and radial profiles of using this probe were built up shot by shot.…”

“…The result is a nonuniform profile, which during sustainment is higher on the driven open flux and lower on the closed flux. 7,8 A major goal of the SPHEX program has been to identify the relaxation mechanism, which has also been the subject of intensive research for Reverse Field Pinches ͑RFPs͒. SPHEX, described fully by Ref.…”

“…Careful measurements were performed of the current density and h profiles in SPHEX using a novel Rogowski/magnetic probe [44]. They found a discontinuity in the profiles at the interface between the column and the annulus.…”
