Natural History Dioramas – Traditional Exhibits for Current Educational Themes

The diorama remains one of the most popular exhibit types in museums, and it has proven its educational potential time and time again. In spite of this, the specific mechanisms behind that educational potential remain unclear. In other words, museum practitioners and museum researchers know that dioramas work, we just don't know how they work. In the following, we use visual perception theory as well as cognitive linguistics to explain the perceptual and meaning-making mechanisms that give dioramas their unique potential. Specifically, we construct a framework to understand how museum visitors can 'translate' the visual scene from what is essentially a collection of specimens in a box into a meaningful experience.

RESUMO: Um dos grandes desafios da educação desenvolvida nos museus hoje é expor o tema da biodiversidade, promovendo a sua compreensão. Nesta pesquisa, estuda-se o que o público adulto compreende sobre biodiversidade ao visitar dioramas em exposições de dois museus de zoologia, um nacional e um internacional. Analisamos aqui os dados coletados com quatro sujeitos por meio do método de thinking aloud seguido de entrevista, a partir das categorias de abordagens de biodiversidade. Como resultados, observamos que a abordagem mais presente foi aquela ao nível de organização de espécie e as ausentes se referiram ao nível genético e à abordagem humana. Os resultados apontam para o potencial e os limites dos dioramas para a compreensão da biodiversidade em museus. Palavras-chave: Biodiversidade; Dioramas; Pesquisa de público. The chapters in this volume provide rich evidence of the increasing variety and cultural diversity of science communication practices across the world (Bucchi & Trench, 2021). Collectively, the science communication initiatives described here exemplify a range of progressive approaches, including dialogue, active engagement, learning-by-doing, and co-construction of knowledge, that in various ways reflect re-inventions or re-imaginings of science communication. In addition, this collection of work points to the inevitable conclusion that dialogue is necessary not just between science and society but also between science communication practitioners and researchers from different ecologies – countries, cultures, institutions and practices. We thus see this volume as a contribution to longitudinal studies of science communication across contexts, disciplines, purposes, and formats. Only in this way can the ecosystem of science communication continue to grow more diverse and self-reflective.
