During the last decade, hobbyist metal detecting has increased in Norway, and causes both issues and opportunities for archaeological research and heritage management. Metal objects found in the plough-zone present important issues for both archaeological research and heritage management. In this paper, I review recent papers discussing hobbyist metal detecting in Norway. The main objective is to identify regulations, focuses and attitudes regarding hobbyist metal detecting, and to define the most important issues brought up by the discussants. Discussants seem to either emphasise protection of plough-zone finds, or problematise the relation between hobbyist metal detecting and protection of automatically protected sites. I suggest discussants should focus on a larger topic – the purpose of in situ protection of invisible sites in the plough-zone.

“…The scheme has been extraordinarily successful and as of April 2023 the database holds information about more than 1.6 million artefacts and coins. There are now similar schemes in the Netherlands (Kars and Heeren 2018), Denmark (Dobat et al 2019), Finland (Hyvönen et al 2021), and the Czech Republic (Padjla et al 2023), with explorations into setting up equivalent schemes in several other countries. There was also an attempt to set up a scheme in Flanders, although this is no longer being actively developed (Deckers et al 2016).…”

This article discusses the situation that exists in several European countries, whereby information about archaeological sites and monuments, and that about finds recorded by members of the public (primarily via metal detecting), is held in entirely separate databases. This prevents heritage management decisions being taken with full awareness of known archaeology, and makes research that seeks to draw on multiple information resources difficult. The article demonstrates how the European ARIADNE e-infrastructure has facilitated the integration of large-scale artefact and site information. Over one million records from the British Museum Portable Antiquities Scheme database and over one million records for English sites, monuments, and grey literature have been integrated in an open access interface for the first time, permitting entirely new research questions to be addressed.

Small brooches with Christian motifs from the period of c. AD 1050–1150 occur frequently amongst metal-detector finds in Denmark. Those known as Urnes brooches, bird-shaped brooches and circular animal brooches are especially common finds over most of the country. In order to understand what lies behind the distribution and significance of these brooches, the issues of where they were made and who was responsible for production are key questions. The large number of finds must reflect a serial form of production, but up to a few years ago secure evidence of any workshop has been almost effectively absent. Presented in this paper are two recent finds of workshops in which the manufacture of these types of brooches took place, in Ribe and Aalborg respectively. On the basis of the archaeological contexts of the workshops and the finds, it is proposed that this production is to be seen as primarily an urban phenomenon, with the Church as initiator and key agent, directed at a broad circle of customers. This may have been part of an evangelizing thrust with wider popular appeal in which these small but highly meaningful artefacts played an important symbolic role.
