The differentiation of eucrites: The role of in situ crystallization

Abstract: Abstract— We report on major and trace element analyses of 17 eucrites, including three cumulate eucrites (Binda, Moore County, and Serra de Magé), determined by, respectively, inductively‐coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry and inductively‐coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The results obtained for Binda and Moore County are consistent with the model of Treiman (1997) for the formation of cumulate eucrites, which holds that these meteorites were produced from a eucritic melt. Our sample of Serra de Mag… Show more

“…As observed in most of the known eucrites, there are no systematic differences in chemical compositions of minerals among different textural regions. The chemical data are broadly consistent with literature values for noncumulate eucrites, although TiO 2 values are lower than those presented by Barrat et al (2000) (Figure 8). …”

“…Comparing the percentage of TiO 2 and FeO/MgO ratio of Serra Pelada with the literature (Figure 8), the Serra Pelada FeO/MgO ratio is located in the region close to that of noncumulate eucrites (Barrat et al 2000), although the TiO 2 wt% is lower than expected for these meteorites.…”

“…In addition, three modern island arc basalts (IABs) from New Britain (NMNH 116852-1, 116852-3 and 116852-11) were also analyzed here to test the accuracy of the measurements (see Dauphas et al (2009a) for a detailed discussion about IABs). “…The study of HED cumulate lithologies provides a complementary view of early magmatic processes on Vesta. Although it is generally accepted that a few gabbros, the cumulate eucrites, formed from "ordinary" eucritic melts (Treiman 1997;Barrat et al 2000a;Saiki et al 2001;Barrat 2004), the origin of the diogenites and the composition of their parental melts remain unresolved (e.g., Mittlefehldt 1994;Fowler et al 1994Fowler et al , 1995Shearer et al 1997;Barrat 2004). Diogenites are believed to be a major lithological component of Vesta.…”
