The different faces of renal angiomyolipomas on radiologic imaging: a pictorial review

Abstract: Renal angiomyolipoma (AML) is an uncommon renal tumour, generally composed of mature adipose tissue, dysmorphic blood vessels and smooth muscle. Identification of intratumoral fat on unenhanced CT images is the most reliable finding for establishing the diagnosis of renal AML. However, AMLs sometimes exhibit atypical findings, including cystic as well as solid forms; some of these variants overlap with the appearance of other renal tumours. A rare type of AML, the epithelioid type, possesses malignant potentia… Show more

“…Instead, we focused on ccRCC as it is the most predominant RCC subtype . We also did not consider other nontumor renal pathologies, such as angiomyolipoma (AML), although recent evidence suggests that AML can be safely diagnosed by imaging . The use of histology as the diagnostic gold standard represents another limitation.…”

“…3 We also did not consider other nontumor renal pathologies, such as angiomyolipoma (AML), although recent evidence suggests that AML can be safely diagnosed by imaging. 46 The use of histology as the diagnostic gold standard represents another limitation. Pathologists frequently struggle to accurately classify SRMs (pT1a, ≤4 cm); however, recent reports suggest that renal biopsy is a safe and accurate technique for diagnosis.…”

“…However, recent evidence suggests that angiomyolipoma can be safely diagnosed by imaging. 40 The use of histology as the gold standard of SRM diagnosis represents another limitation. Pathologists frequently struggle to accurately classify incidentally detected SRMs (pT1a; 4 cm); however, recent evidence suggests that renal biopsy is a safe and accurate technique for diagnosis.…”
