The Diamantina Monazite: A New Low‐Th Reference Material for Microanalysis

Abstract: Most monazite reference materials (RMs) for in situ U‐Pb geochronology are rich in Th; however, many hydrothermal ore deposits contain monazite that is low in trace element contents, including Th, U and Pb. Because of potential problems with matrix effects and the lack of appropriate matrix‐matched RMs, such variations can bias dating of hydrothermal deposits. In this paper, we describe a polycrystalline low‐U and low‐Th Diamantina monazite from the Espinhaço Range, SE Brazil. It has a U‐Pb ID‐TIMS weighted me… Show more

“…An ideal monazite standard would be homogeneous for U-Th-Pb ages and O-Nd isotopic and elemental compositions, as well as being easily available to the scientific community. To date, ten monazite reference materials have been reported for the O isotope, and nine for the Nd isotope (e.g., [12][13][14][15][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25], Table 1). Among them, six are heterogeneous in elemental compositions (eBay, USGS-44069, Itambe, UNIL-Mnz2, M1, and M4), two are heterogeneous in O isotopic compositions (eBay and 554), and Manangoutry monazite is of limited quantity.…”

“…End-members are calculated according to Pyle et al[8]. The Diamantina, UNIL-Mnz1, USGS-44069, Itambe, Moacyr, UNIL-Mnz2, and Manangoutry data are from Rubatto et al[14], Didier et al[15], and Gonçalves et al[19].…”

“…Chemical compositions were also obtained using an Element II SF‐ICP‐MS, coupled with a G2‐PhotonMachines excimer (193 nm) laser ablation system (e.g., Santos et al, ) at the Laboratório de Geoquímica (UFOP). U‐Pb ages were obtained using quadrupole, sector field single collector, and multicollector ICP‐MS instruments (LA‐Q‐ICP‐MS, LA‐SF‐ICP‐MS and LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS) at UFOP (e.g., Gonçalves et al, ; Santos et al, ; Takenaka et al, ). The U‐Pb measurements were undertaken in automated mode, with a spatial resolution of 20–30 μm.…”

“…Recently, Gonçalves et al . () investigated a low‐U and low‐Th Diamantina monazite from SE Brazil and proposed this sample as a primary RM. The analytical data show that the Sm‐Nd and oxygen isotopic compositions are homogeneous.…”
