The dialectics of sketching

Abstract: This research project addresses the design process for creating knowledge organization schemes and presents novel means of supporting the sketching of collections. Based on a recent experience designing a digital media collection using the Open Video Digital Library Toolkit, this research analyzes the two major obstacles encountered in sketching collections.

“…Although we cannot detail more cases here, from our investigations this case is not an atypical instance of discovery in design (Dogan & Nersessian, 2005). On the one hand, the Staatsgalerie case study aligns with accounts of design cognition that emphasize the centrality of sketches as the primary architectural representations in the process of discovery (Goel, 1995;Goldschmidt, 1991;Scho¨n, 1992). On the other hand, it provides an alternative to views that single out the serendipity of discovery processes in design and the role of unconstrained sketching while ignoring the more structured processes of discovery that are also evident in design.…”

“…D esign cognition studies emphasize the facilitating role of sketches in the process of creative discovery (Goel, 1995;Goldschmidt, 1991;Scho¨n, 1992). Some of these accounts describe the design process via sketching almost exclusively either in terms of 'serendipity' (Suwa, Gero, & Purcell, 2000) or of 'piecemeal evolution' of design ideas through localized changes (Maher & Tang, 2003).…”

“…While imagination is limited to only one image at a time, sketching allows the designer to visualise a number of representations at once and thus the designer would be able to combine or compare these representations. Although literature describes how sketching enhances creativity (G. Goldschmidt 1991;van der Lugt 2005) and presents the type of sketches that enhance creativity (Wodehouse et al 2013), it does not address the type of sketches which reflect the creativity of the designer best. The first research question addressed in this paper therefore aims to determine and assess such sketches.…”

“…Thirdly, sketching produces a wide collection of interrelated drawings, while CAD systems construct a single model isolated from the global process. Moreover, the sketch is not simply an externalisation of a supposed designer's mental image; it is also a heuristic field of exploration in which the designer discovers new interpretations of his own drawing, opening up a path to new perspectives for resolution [11,23].…”
