The diagnostic benefit of antibodies against ribosomal proteins in systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract: Background: Anti-ribosomal P (anti-Rib-P) antibody is a specific serological marker for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and routinely tested by targeting the common epitope of three ribosomal proteins of P0, P1 and P2. This study aimed to investigate if testing antibodies against individual ribosomal protein, but not the common epitope, is required to achieve the best diagnostic benefit in SLE. Methods: The study included 82 patients with SLE and 22 healthy donors. Serum antibodies were determined by ELISA … Show more

“…The ribosomal pathway is closely related to SLE. [ 31 , 32 ] A previous study showed that 15% to 35% of patients with SLE harbor ribosomal P antibodies, which are highly specific and detected in most cases of cSLE. [ 33 ] These antibodies promote the production of proinflammatory cytokines, leading to central nervous system damage, and are closely related to SLE neuropsychiatric manifestations, especially psychosis.…”

“…Anti-ribosomal P (anti-Rib-P) antibodies are specific serological markers observed in patients [ 61 ]. Anti-ribosomal-P antibodies are located at the carboxy-terminal end of the 60S subunit of ribosomes and target three phosphorylated proteins, P0, P1, and P2 [ 62 ].…”
