The diagnostic and prognostic utility of prostate-specific antigen for diseases of the breast

Abstract: Although prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is the most valuable tumor marker for the diagnosis and management of prostate carcinoma, it is widely accepted that PSA is not prostate specific. Numerous studies have shown that PSA is present in some female hormonally regulated tissues, principally the breast and its secretions. In this review, we summarize the findings of PSA in the breast, and focus on its potential for clinical applications in breast disease. PSA is produced by the majority of breast tumors and is… Show more

“…With the availability of highly sensitive techniques, it has become apparent that both hK2 and hK3 are also expressed at lower levels in many other tissues, including breast, thyroid, and salivary glands (Yu and Diamandis 1995;Black and Diamandis 2000;Magklara et al 2000). The expression of hK10 mainly by glandular epithelia suggests that it is secreted.…”

“…PSA is the best screening marker available for prostate cancer (13). PSA is now known to exist in nonprostatic tissues, including the breast, lung, ovary, uterus, and pancreas (15)(16)(17). We have determined in a small cohort that PSA levels in NAF are inversely associated with breast cancer (18), suggesting that PSA may be a useful marker to screen women at risk for the disease.…”

“…Prostate-specific antigen (PSA, hK3), a member of this family, is an established tumour marker for prostate cancer (Barry, 2001). Prostate-specific antigen SA was recently found to be expressed in the female breast and might have a prognostic value in breast cancer (Black and Diamandis, 2000). Furthermore, other kallikreins were also found to have prognostic value in breast and other endocrine malignancies (Liu et al, 1996;Tanimoto et al, 1999;Yousef et al, 2000a;Benson et al, 2002;Diamandis and Yousef, 2002;Diamandis, 2002a, 2003;Diamandis et al, 2003;Luo et al, 2003).…”
