The diagnosis of primary thyroid lymphoma by fine‐needle aspiration, cell block, and immunohistochemistry technique

Abstract: Aim: Primary thyroid lymphoma (PTL) is a rare malignant disease. Its prognosis depends on early diagnosis. The role of fine-needle aspiration (FNA), including smear cytology, cell block (CB) techniques, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) sections in the diagnosis of PTL is still unclear. Here we reported 19 cases of PTL and literature review to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy for lymphoma by cytology. Methods: Our study retrospectively reviewed 19 patients diagnosed with PTL at the affiliated hospital of Southwes… Show more

“…The subtype and the disease stage determine the diagnosis specificity and the prognosis. Despite the identification of DLBCL tends to be relatively easy on cytology, the diagnosis sensitivity of thyroid lymphoma in general, after fine needle aspiration, is increased by the combination of cytology, cell block analysis, and immunohistochemistry [ 16 ]. The tendency for the disease to occur more frequently in patients with long-standing autoimmune diseases including, those of the thyroid, particularly is remarkable [ 17 ].…”

“…In contrast to surgery, they are less invasive ( 8 , 17 , 18 ). The initial diagnostic method for thyroid lymphoma should consist of FNAB with the use of additional techniques, such as the cell block technique, CNB, flow cytometry, and IHC staining for improved diagnostic accuracy ( 19 , 20 ).…”

“…The lack of marked atypia in PTL makes a definitive cytological diagnosis difficult [10]. In contrast to other cases, FNA gave sufficient information to determine the tumor type, even without initial immunohistochemical staining [11]. However, histological verification was also performed to confirm the diagnosis.…”
