The diachronism of the Wenlock Limestone

Abstract: A quick transgressive event occurs near the top of the Wenlock Limestone. The initiation of this is thought to be synchronous, proving the top of the Wenlock Limestone to be diachronous and younging southwards. As a result the top of this rock unit cannot be used satisfactorily as a time line. It is suggested that the initiation of the transgression be taken as the practical means for the correlation of the Wenlock‐Ludlow Series boundary. The Birmingham Siltstone Formation is erected for the strata between Dud… Show more

“…Based on brachiopod palaeocommunity data, Hurst (1975) concluded that the top of the formation in the West Midlands is the same age as on Wenlock Edge, but that it youngs from north to south. Unambiguous graptolite evidence (Bassett, 1974(Bassett, , 1976(Bassett, , 1989 shows his first conclusion to be incorrect.…”

“…Consideration of lithofacies distribution (Sections 2.c.2, 5) indicates that migration was from east to west, supporting the available biostratigraphical data. The basal parts of the overlying Lower Elton Beds in the West Midlands (= Birmingham Siltstone Formation of Hurst, 1975) are the time equivalent of the top of the Much Wenlock Limestone Formation on Wenlock Edge (Fig. 7).…”

“…Whether this sealevel rise was rapid or more gradual has been the subject of some debate (e.g. Hurst, 1975;Bassett, 1976). The nilssoni-scanicus biozones record the highest late Silurian sea-levels (Johnson, Kaljo & Rong, 1991;Johnson, 1996).…”

“…At the outset it can be stated that Hurst's (1975b) postulation of an abrupt deepening, based on community changes close to the Wenlock-Ludlow boundary in the Welsh Borderland, is no more than an unsupported assumption. Nowhere in the data on carbonate community composition (Hurst 1975a) is there evidence of such a sharp change, but, on the contrary, the relevant faunal lists (Hurst 1975a, Tables 1-3) clearly show that the majority of taxa spread across more than one community, indicating complete gradation between them.…”

“…The recent paper in this journal by Hurst (1975b), on diachronism in the late Wenlock (Silurian) carbonate facies of the Welsh Borderland, mainly uses distributions of ecologically controlled brachiopod communities to draw an unorthodox picture of Wenlock-Ludlow chronostratigraphical correlation throughout the area. In particular, the community relationships suggest to Hurst (1975b: 306) that near the top of the Wenlock 'there was an abrupt deepening of the sea .…”
