The development, reliability, and validity of the Facilitator Assessment Tool: An implementation fidelity measure used in Parenting for Lifelong Health for Young Children

Abstract: Background: The Parenting for Lifelong Health for Young Children (PLH-YC) programme aims to reduce violence against children and child behaviour problems among families in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Although the programme has been tested in four randomised controlled trials and delivered in over 25 countries, there are gaps in understanding regarding the programme's implementation fidelity and, more generally, concerning the implementation fidelity of parenting programmes in LMICs.

“…One session per facilitator will be observed live or video-recorded and assessed using the recording with the Facilitator Assessment Tool. 55 Facilitators and supervisors will complete questionnaires to provide information on demographics and previous experience and to collect pre-post data on staff well-being and parenting stress (for staff who are caregivers). The sample sizes are determined by the delivery model and the number of families in the intervention study.…”

“…Content fidelity was measured using a checklist consisting of items that captured key intervention strategies for each session. It was developed by the research team following the treatment components of the adapted PLH-YC and the PLH-YC Facilitator Assessment Tool (Martin et al, 2023). Either “present” or “absent” was recorded to indicate whether a content area was covered during a session, with a standard of 80% regarded as high intervention fidelity (Borrelli et al, 2005).…”

“… Designing fidelity measures and assessment processes that will provide valuable information to various stakeholders, not just researchers. To do so, measures might be designed by engaging stakeholders in a content validity exercise (e.g., Martin et al, 2022 ). Establishing procedures to collect fidelity assessment data as well as relevant information associated with the fidelity assessment process (e.g., documenting time required per assessor and per trainer to complete assessor training).…”
