In conversation with tragic readings of Saul’s career, the present article attempts to outline a parallel between the presentation and role of the spirit of YHWH and the evil spirit which afflicts Saul in 1 Samuel. By highlighting the parallel between the two spirits, the following argument suggests that they fulfil similar roles in confirming election and rejection respectively and either empowering or debilitating their recipients. The suggestion is that this analogy offers an appropriate way to understand the wider presentation of the evil spirit which afflicts Saul and has important implications for how we think about Saul’s rejection and his presentation more broadly.

Čtenář, který se seznamuje se Saulovým příběhem, obvykle prožívá smíšené pocity při snaze pochopit náhlé zvraty a paradoxy, kterými je život prvního izraelského krále naplněn. Saul jde hledat oslice a najde království. Zpočátku je líčen ve velmi pozitivním světle a dvakrát je oficiálně prohlášen za krále (1 Sam 9-11). Lid se raduje z nového vysvoboditele, který je jak naplněn Hospodinovým Duchem, tak i svým vzhledem odpovídá tehdejší představě vhodného krále. Po Samuelově promluvě (1 Sam 12) však náhle a nečekaně přichází překvapení, když je Saul opět dvakrát zavržen (1 Sam 13-15). To je samozřejmě pro čtenáře zarážející a matoucí. Proč je Saul ze začátku vykreslen jako první izraelský král pozitivně, aby byl vzápětí Hospodinem zavržen? A co víc -u prvního zavržení (1 Sam 13) není ani pořádně jasné, proč je zavržen. Málokdo by poté navíc očekával, že navzdory svému zavržení zůstane králem až do své smrti. Kniha První Samuelova pak dalších dlouhých 15 kapitol popisuje epizody ze Saulova panování. Není divu, že čtenář je z této struktury mírně zmatený a vyvolává to v něm řadu otázek. Proč je vyvolení a zavržení zmíněno vždy dvakrát, a proč jsou tyto protichůdné události postaveny tak blízko u sebe hned na začátku Saulových příběhů? Proč text čtenáře už od počátku nepřipravuje na možný zvrat v Saulově životě? Právě na tyto otázky bych v tomto článku rád nabídl odpověď.I když většina autorů tyto paradoxy v textu vysvětluje za pomoci diachronního přístupu, rozhodl jsem se k textu přistupovat naopak synchronně a vzít v úvahu jeho finální formu. Jsem totiž přesvědčen, že většina narativních biblických textů má vedle svého obsahového sdělení rovněž vnitřní literární strukturu, která pomáhá dovysvětlit záměr daného textu. Tuto strukturu je třeba nejprve rozeznat a zharmonizovat ji s obsahem narativního textu. Strukturu také mohou ovlivňovat podobnosti, které mohou pomoci při interpretaci jednotlivých postav i dějů.
