Effects of energy retrofits on Indoor Air Quality in multifamily buildings

We assessed 45 multifamily buildings (240 apartments) from Finland and 20 (96 apartments) from Lithuania, out of which 37 buildings in Finland and 15 buildings in Lithuania underwent energy retrofits. Building characteristics, retrofit activities, and energy consumption data were collected, and Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) parameters, including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), formaldehyde (CH2O), selected volatile organic compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX), radon, and microbial content in settled dust were measured before and after the retrofits. After the retrofits, heating energy consumption decreased by an average of 24% and 49% in Finnish and Lithuanian buildings, respectively. After the retrofits of Finnish buildings, there was a significant increase in BTEX concentrations (estimated mean increase of 2.5 µg/m3), whereas significant reductions were seen in fungal (0.6‐log reduction in cells/m2/d) and bacterial (0.6‐log reduction in gram‐positive and 0.9‐log reduction in gram‐negative bacterial cells/m2/d) concentrations. In Lithuanian buildings, radon concentrations were significantly increased (estimated mean increase of 13.8 Bq/m3) after the retrofits. Mechanical ventilation was associated with significantly lower CH2O concentrations in Finnish buildings. The results and recommendations presented in this paper can inform building retrofit studies and other programs and policies aimed to improve indoor environment and health.

ResumoA eficiência energética em edificações está relacionada à arquitetura bioclimática, que é a adequação da edificação ao clima local. Este estudo objetivou analisar a influência de determinadas características arquitetônicas e construtivas no consumo de eletricidade de edificações situadas em Mossoró, RN, cujo clima é tropical semiárido. Foram coletados dados relativos às características térmicas e geométricas dos elementos arquitetônicos, como: formato da edificação, disposição e uso dos ambientes, orientação cardeal das fachadas, posicionamento de elementos transparentes e propriedades térmicas dos materiais que compõem os sistemas construtivos. Para análise do desempenho termoenergético de parâmetros como transmitância e absortância térmica de paredes externas e da cobertura, percentual de aberturas nas fachadas, ângulos verticais de sombreamento de elementos translúcidos e orientação cardeal das edificações, utilizou-se o programa EnergyPlus, que simula o consumo de eletricidade predial ao longo do ano, baseado em modelos similares às edificações deste estudo. Nestas edificações, em função das variáveis arquitetônicas testadas, o condicionamento artificial de ar foi o principal responsável pela variação de consumo anual de eletricidade, enquanto que o consumo de sistemas de iluminação artificial e de equipamentos permaneceu constante em todos os cenários simulados. Adicionalmente, os revestimentos claros e refletivos das edificações, o baixo percentual de áreas envidraçadas nas fachadas e a existência de elementos de sombreamento contribuíram para minimizar os efeitos da radiação solar no aquecimento das edificações. A partir deste diagnóstico, são propostas recomendações projetuais para envoltória de edificações termicamente eficientes, inseridas no clima tropical semiárido e que tenham a necessidade de condicionamento artificial de ar.Palavras-chave: Arquitetura bioclimática. This study aimed to analyze the influence of specific architectural and construction characteristics on the electricity consumption in buildings located at Mossoró, RN, whose climate is tropical semi-arid. We recorded data of thermal and geometric characteristics of the architectural elements, such as building shape, layout, and use of spaces, the cardinal orientation of facades, positioning of translucent elements and thermal properties of construction systems materials. The importance of sustainable development and energy efficiency efforts has increased in the construction sector. Energy-saving efforts for buildings have become more important due to the global energy crisis, and energy rating systems have been developed globally for assessment of energy performance. In this study, international green building certificate and energy performance certificate (EPC) systems are presented. The official EPC system for buildings in Turkey is illustrated with case studies. Energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from residential buildings are calculated using the official national software, which is called BEP-TR. The impact of lighting on the total energy performance of residential buildings is also examined. Changes in energy performance values are discussed for various cases. As a result of this study, it was determined that residential buildings constructed before 2000 consume more energy than those constructed after 2000; they are a lower energy performance class of buildings. Use of energy-saving lamps has also had a positive impact on both lighting and total energy performance classes. This paper aims to contribute to the promotion of building energy certification systems and energy efficiency issues for the construction sector.
