Abstract: The types of early secondary schools.-The grammar schools in the height of their development fell within the colonial period. The school which then rose to great popularity was the academy. We have seen the plans for the Philadelphia Academy, and the mention of a few others, but following the Revolution academies were incorporated and endowed in large numbers in all the states and were recognized as the secondary schools.
