Concerns related to increasing CO 2 emission and its effects on global warming and climate change have been increased with increasing the global consumption of fossil fuels. One solution to respond to this challenge is the development and utilization of carbon capturing and storage technologies. Among different carbon capturing technologies, direct air capture (DAC) reduces CO 2 emissions from air. While the technology readiness level (TRL) of DAC is in the demonstration stage, identifying the commercialization research gaps and possible opportunities can help with diffusion and adoption of the technology. This research uses a knowledge discovery in research databases, based on bibliometric analysis and data mining, to understand DAC research and development's current status and future. Then, we identify the critical areas of the research gap for commercialization. The bibliometric analysis results show that DAC has not yet reached its maturity level compared with other carbon capture technologies (CCTs). However, there are different opportunities for the development of this technology.The results indicate that (a) new systematic designs, improvement in nano-catalysts, increase in the capturing capacity, (b) economic and investment improvements in combination with the environmental assessment of the optimized DAC technology, (c) assessment of future prospects, (d) integration with alternative energy supply sources especially renewable energy to respond to the required energy and process integration with current carbon emitted processes, (e) technology demonstration and readiness assessment, and (f) policy and uncertainty analysis of the market are the key areas that should be investigated for the success of this technology in the competitive market.

Effect of Ammonia on Laminar Combustion Characteristics of Methane–Air Flames at Elevated Pressures

In this paper, laminar combustion characteristics of methane/ammonia/air flames are numerically investigated using the Chemkin/Premix code. The initial temperature is set as 298 K; the initial pressures are set as 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 atm; and the equivalence ratios are set as 0.8–1.6. Laminar burning velocity (LBV); adiabatic flame temperature (AFT); net heat release rate (NHRR); and the mole fractions of H, NH 2 , NO, NO 2 , and HCN at stoichiometric ratio are studied with ammonia (NH 3 ) addition. Meanwhile, temperature sensitivity and rate of production (ROP) are analyzed. The results show that with the increase of the initial pressures, LBV decreases and AFT and NHRR increase. With the increase of ammonia doping ratios, LBV, AFT, and NHRR decrease. From temperature sensitivity analyses, the main reactions that promote temperature rise are R39 (H + O 2 < = > O + OH), R100 (OH + CH 3 < = > CH 2 (S) + H 2 O), R102 (OH + CO < = > H + CO 2 ), and R122 (HO 2 + CH 3 < = > OH + CH 3 O). The main reactions that inhibit temperature rise are R53 (H + CH 3 (+M) < = > CH 4 (+M)), R36 (H + O 2 + H 2 O < = > HO 2 + H 2 O), and R46 (H + HO 2 < = > O 2 + H 2 ). For the rate of production of the free radical pool, the trends of H and NO are consuming first and then producing, and the trends of NH 2 , NO 2 , and HCN are the opposite. The pathway from methane to carbon dioxide is CH 4 → CH 3 → CH 3 O → CH 2 O → HCO → CO → CO 2 , and the pathway from ammonia to nitrogen is NH 3 → NH 2 → NH/HNO → NO/NO 2 → N 2 .

The N-formylation reaction of various amines with CO 2 is a promising method to utilize CO 2 for the production of high value-added chemicals. Herein, an efficient Ru catalyst system consisting of Ru complex ([PPN][Ru(CO) 3 Cl 3 ]) and the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen phosphate ([Bmim] 2 [HPO 4 ]), has been developed for the N-formylation reaction. Activity evaluation demonstrated that the catalyst system exhibited good to excellent yields of formamides under very mild conditions with the assistance of ionic liquids (ILs). Furthermore, the catalyst system could be reused at least five times with a slight loss of activity in N-formylmorpholine production. Further characterization by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13 C NMR, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the ILs ([Bmim] 2 [HPO 4 ]) could facilitate the adsorption of CO 2 by a concerted action of both cations and anions of the ILs to form phosphorus carbonate intermediate, thus effectively promoting the reaction. DFT calculations demonstrated that the formation of Ru−H was the first step, and then the CO 2 absorbed by [Bmim] 2 [HPO 4 ] inserted directly into Ru−H by cooperating with the Ru sites to form HCOO − species. After that, formate species dissociated from Ru catalysts and dehydrated to form formamides by the catalytic action of Ru complex and the basic IL.
