The Development of an Open Source Framework for Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimization

Abstract: This paper presents the motivation for the development of an open source framework for performing Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimization (MDAO) to aid in the design of unconventional aircraft. While a number of frameworks already exist, critical and desirable requirements are still not satisfactorily met. For developing a new framework, an open source development is the most logical choice, in particular because it provides the means to rapidly develop a community of users who can also contribute enhancem… Show more

“…Some recent publications in the MDO literature have reached similar conclusions to ourselves about the desirability of workflow approaches (e.g. Shi et al 2005;Bereneds et al 2008;Moore et al 2008), but we observe that the published descriptions appear to use bespoke software rather than workflow tools.…”

“…Initiatives from NASA [Moore et al 2008], Boeing [OSEE 2009] and Airbus [Farail et al 2006] show that the aerospace industry not only embraced the idea of open source but also adopts established solutions from the software industry like Eclipse [Eclipse 2009] for their domain specific needs.…”

“…Permissive open source licenses, also called non-viral licenses, provide a good balance between protecting the integrity of the core framework and allowing for integration with commercial and proprietary plugins. 1 Under NOSA, OpenMDAO can be freely distributed and used. If changes are made to any of the modules delivered as part of OpenMDAO, the resulting new modules retain the NOSA license.…”
