BackgroundThe Mini-IPIP scales (Donellan et al., 2006) are possibly one of the most commonly used short inventories for measuring the Big Five Factors of personality. In this study, we aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of two Mini-IPIP Spanish short forms, one balanced and one positively wording (PW).MethodTwo samples, one from native Spanish speakers and another from native English speakers, made up a total of 940 participants in this study. The short forms were translated and adapted based on international guidelines. Reliability (internal and composite) and validity analyses (construct ESEM, concurrent, predictive and cross-cultural invariance through multi-group factorial models) were performed.ResultsFor both the balanced scale and the PW one, modeling a method factor was not relevant. The reliability and validity indices of both forms were according to theory and prior studies’ findings: (a) personality factors were medium-high related to affective factors; (b) personality factors were less related to life satisfaction than affective factors; (c) life satisfaction was medium-high related to affective factors; (d) neuroticism appeared mainly related to all criteria variables; and (e) an acceptable level of invariance was achieved with regard to the English version.DiscussionThis study contributes to research on personality assessment by providing the first evidence regarding the psychometric properties of a PW short measure. These results suggest that PW short scales of personality used after data screening techniques may be appropriate for future studies (e.g., cross-cultural, content validity).

The International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) five-factor model inventories are a widely used resource for personality research and have been translated into multiple languages. However, the extent of the psychometric assessment of translated scales is variable. Here we present a structural analysis of one Spanish translation of the 50-item IPIP five-factor inventory in a sample of Peruvian non-university educated working adults (n=778). A global confirmatory factor analytic (CFA) model of the a priori five factors failed to fit. So too did single factor models for four of the five factors, the exception being Neuroticism. Fit was improved via use of an exploratory structural equation measurement model, but the resultant solution showed very poor theoretical coherence. The pattern of factor loadings suggested that the lack of coherence might be due to the effects of the valence of item wording. CFA models including five substantive factors and a series of method factors modelling shared covariance based on item wording, improved fit and coherence. This investigation suggests that the tested Spanish translation, without explicitly modelling method factors, may not be suitable for use in certain Spanish-speaking countries or samples composed of non-university educated participants.

The psychometric properties of a bank of 36 items are presented measuring Neuroticism based on the Five-Factor Model. These items pertain to the facets that were identified by the work of McCrae and Costa. The sample was comprised of 1133 adult subjects that reside in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area in Argentina. Women accounted for 52.1% of those subjects with an average age of 29.5 years (SD = 11.32). In order to get the items calibrated according to Item Response Theory (Graded Response Model), acquire the bank’s information functions and assess the estimated associations with other instruments, 70% of the cases were randomly selected. An adaptive administration simulation was made with the remaining 30% so as to test two stopping rules: a) using 18 items and b) standard error of ≤ 0.25. Correlations greater than .95 were found between the estimated bank scores and the two adaptive versions. The advantages of using the adaptive Neuroticism measurement over other well-renowned instruments that use conventional large formats, as well as abbreviated ones, are discussed.
