The Development of a Research and Extension Program for Sustainable Agriculture in Western Washington

Abstract: Sales of organic foods are one of the fastest growing segments of Washington state's food industry. In response to grower demand for information on organic and sustainable production practices, Washington State University (WSU) created an Extension Agricultural Systems position. “…An intense photosynthesis process with decreases in CO2 concentration shows that the connection between the scion and rootstock has been achieved, so the grafted plants are healed. In Figure 4 is schematically presented this healing room used to continuously measure the CO2 exchange rates in grafted cucumber plants, developed at Chiba University, Japan [9]. The environment is controlled by a humidifier, heater, and cooler attached to the data logger and controller.…”

“…Grasses are commonly used for soil erosion control and streambank stabilization throughout the wet, humid, and semiarid tropics (Young, 1989;National Research Council, 1993). Additionally, temperate bamboos have been suggested as a potential species for revegetation of riparian corridors in North America (Miles, 1998;Harker et al, 1999;Schoonover and Williard, 2003;Cirtain et al, 2004).…”
