The development of a genetic linkage map of blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum L.) and the identification of regions associated with key fruit quality and agronomic traits

Abstract: The first genetic linkage map of blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum L.) was constructed using AFLP, SSR (genomic and EST-derived) and SNP markers, in a mapping population derived from two diverse breeding clones of blackcurrant from the SCRI breeding programme. Cluster analysis of the population revealed that the individuals within the population formed two distinct sub-populations, with segregation ratios consistent with one sub-population having the two intended parents, and the other being selfed segregants. The la… Show more

“…16 hours was proposed for blackcurrant. QTLs for the timing of flowering have been identified by Brennan et al (2007). The duration of flowering in blackcurrant is usually between three and four weeks, although historical data show that flowering of blackcurrant in the U.K. has in recent years become earlier and more protracted, possibly due to climatic changes (Atkinson et al 2005).…”

“…In terms of economic importance, the crop is mainly used for processing, especially juice production, where the high levels of ascorbic acid and anthocyanins are valued (Brennan et al, 2008). For better development of currant research and industry, identification of currant cultivars and germplasm resources is indispensable.…”
