“…Recalls were administered according to multiple-pass approach with standardized protocol, interview structure, and probing questions. To facilitate the evaluation of food servings and improve accuracy of reporting, participants were prompted with validated two-dimensional portion size estimation aid i.e., booklet comprising photograph-series illustrating a range of reference portions for 135 items (both simple foods and recipes) commonly consumed in the Balkan region [42]. In conjunction with the photographic atlas, household measures, package/labelling data, the standard serving size information and natural units were used to quantify the amount of food consumed.…”

“…The dietary and ancillary data collection protocol was developed by synthesizing the best practice of NHANES and the European Food Safety Agency 11 , 30 . The protocol provided detailed instructions for interviewers on contacting participants, keeping records, conducting both dietary interviews (with particular attention to the multiple-pass method) 32 and use of the food atlas 33 . The protocol developed could be used in the next survey and passed on to any new members of staff.…”

“…The sampling methodology was designed to reflect the demographic distribution of the Serbian population as whole. Dietary data was collected using two un-announced 24-h recalls following the guidelines of the European Food Safety Authority and a standard demographic questionnaire [ 14 , 15 ]. In this nationally-representative sample, we report the relationships between timing of meal intakes, BMI and major indicators of dietary quality: fruit, vegetables, fiber, saturated fat, sugar and sodium intakes.…”
