This study was designed to assess alterations of hormone and cytokine levels associated with growth period during puberty in Honamlı goats which were identified as a new goat breed and had one of the highest meat production potential among the other goat breeds in Turkey. Honamlı goats are originated from native hair goats, so parallel studies of sampling and analyzing were conducted also in native hair goats which have moderate meat production. Blood serum samples of Honamlı (n=90) and native hair goats (n=90) were obtained from the pure herds in Korkuteli and Ka districts of Anatolia. Concentrations of growth hormone (GH), myostatin (MSTN), insulin-like growth factor (IGF), growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH), growth hormone releasing peptide (GHRP), leptin, transforming growth factor-betal (TGF-β1) and vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF) levels were measured by ELISA in each breed in the age groups of 4, 8 and 12 months. The present results indicate interesting correlations among the age groups and all the examined hormone and cytokine parameters exhibited significant (P<0.05 and P<0.001) differences. The parameters investigated were usually begun to increase after 4 months of age in the both breeds and sexes. Therefore, this paper supported the view that the beginning of hormonal alterations of goats could occur at 4th month of age. The results reported here emphasize the primary role played by GH, MSTN, IGF-1, leptin, GHRH, GHRP, TGF-βi and VEGF in the first year growth period of goats.

This study was undertaken to measure the effect of fattening duration (60, 80, and 100 days) on growth performance and carcass characteristics of male kids from indigenous Hair and Honamlı goat breeds reared under intensive fattening systems in Turkey. Fattening duration had a significant effect (P < 0.001) on the fattening performance and a number of carcass characteristics of kids. An interaction was detected between genotype and fattening duration for average daily gain (ADG). Hair goat kids grew at a faster rate than Honamlı kids in the 20-40 day and 40-60 day fattening periods, but they maintained relatively similar ADGs within other fattening periods. On average, over the course of the fattening trial, Honamlı kids grew at an average daily rate of 209 g/head, while Hair goat kids grew at a daily rate of 231 g/head. Dressing percentage and carcass lean and fat percentages of kids increased (P < 0.05-0.001) with slaughter age and weight for both genotypes, whereas the percentage of bone decreased (P < 0.001) with each successive fattening period. No genotypic differences were detected for a number of carcass characteristics at the time of slaughter, with the exception of relatively higher (P < 0.01) fat deposit rates within the kidney and pelvic areas for Hair kids.

Bu çalışmada, Burdur ilinde halk elinde bulunan saf ırk özelliği taşıyan dişi Honamlı keçilerinde Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis Virus (CAEV) enfeksiyonunun varlığı araştırıldı. Bu amaçla 1 yaş üstü, dişi ve sağlıklı görünüme sahip 187 (yüz seksen yedi) adet keçiden kan örneklemesi yapıldı. Çalışmada Honamlı ırkı dişi keçilerin yerleşim yerlerine ve yaşlarına göre seroprevalanslarının ve enfeksiyona karşı hassasiyetlerinin ortaya konması amaçlandı. Örnekleme yapılan ağıl koşulları; Duvar, Çatı ve Zemin, Yemlik ve Suluk, Ortamın İlaçlanması, Ayrı Bölme (Keçi, Teke ve Oğlak), Karışık/Ortak Emzirme olarak 5 kriter altında değerlendirildi. Araştırmada, 5 yerleşim yerinden ve 10 ağıldan toplanan 187 keçi kan serumu, Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) testi uygulanarak CAEV antikorları yönünden kontrol edildi. Test edilen 187 adet keçi kan serumunun 3 (%1.60) adedi seropozitif olarak belirlendi. Yerleşim yerlerine göre seropozitiflik oranları %0-5 arasında tespit edildi. Yaşa göre kan numunelerinde ELISA testi ile 2 yaş grubunda 1 (%1.79), 4 ve üstü yaş grubunda 2 (%8.70) seropozitiflik tespit edildi. 4 farklı yaş grubu arasında seropozitiflik açısından yapılan karşılaştırmada istatistiki önem bulundu (p=0.025, p<0.05). Ağıl durum değerlendirmesinde seropozitiflik bulunan ağıllarda; Duvar, Çatı ve Zemin, Yemlik ve Suluk'ların "Kötü", Ortamın İlaçlanması, Ayrı Bölme (Keçi, Teke ve Oğlak)'lerin "Yok", Karışık/ Ortak Emzirme'nin "Var" olduğu görüldü. Investigation of Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis Virus (CAEV) infection in Honamlı goat breed ABSTRACT In this study, the presence of Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis Virus (CAEV) infection in Honamli does with pure race traits in Burdur province was investigated. For this purpose, blood sampling was performed on 187 (one hundred eighty seven) female goats that have healthy appearance over one year of age. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and susceptibility of the Honamli does against by CAEV according to their settlements and age. The samples were evaluated in terms of 5 criterias; Wall, Roof and Ground, Troughs, Insecticides, Separate Pens (Buck, doe and kid), Mixed / Common Milk Feeders. In this study, 18 goat blood serum collected from 5 settlements and 10 goat barn were checked for CAEV antibodies by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) test. Of the 187 goat blood sera tested, 3 (1.60%) were seropositive. Seropositivity rates were determined as 0-5% according to the settlements. According to age, seropositivity was found to be 1 (1.79%) in 2 age group and 2 (8.70%) in age group 4 and over in blood samples. In the comparison among 4 different age groups in terms of seropositivity, statistical significance was found (p = 0.025, p <0.05). In the goat barns that were found seropositivity in the evaluation of the goat barn; Wall, Roof and Ground, Troughs "Bad", Insecticides, Separate Pens (Buck, doe and kid) "none", Mixed / Common Milk Feeders "there" it was seen.
