Abstract. In order to establish a creditable greenhouse gases (GHGs) monitoring network to support the goals of carbon peak/neutrality, it is necessary to know what we have done and what we have to do in the future. In this study, we summarize an overview to the status and perspective of GHGs monitoring in China. With decades of effort, China has made a great breakthrough in GHGs monitoring capacity and steadily improved the performance of homemade GHGs monitoring instruments. However, most GHGs monitoring studies are hitherto research-oriented, temporal, sparse, and uncoordinated. It is suggested to take full advantages of various monitoring technologies, monitoring platforms, numerical simulations, and inventory compilation techniques to form a creditable GHGs stereoscopic monitoring and assessment system at an operational level. We envisage that this system can routinely quantify GHGs on national, provincial, regional and even individual scales with high spatiotemporal resolution and wide coverage to support low-carbon policy in China.

High-accuracy continuous measurements of atmospheric concentrations of CO 2 were made from May 2016 to December 2017 using the Picarro G2301 analyzer at Xinglong station (40°24′N, 117°3 0′E, 940 MSL), 150 km northeast of Beijing. The near-ground CO 2 measurements were calibrated by standards based on WMO procedures. The regional background measurements were filtered by the robust extraction of baseline signal method to study the seasonal and diurnal cycles. The regional background CO 2 concentrations were low in summer. The maximum difference between the local sources and regional background CO 2 concentrations occurred in summer and autumn, indicating a strong influence from local sources. Cluster analysis and potential source contribution function analysis showed that the long-distance transport of anthropogenic emissions in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei metropolitan area influenced the CO 2 concentrations in Xinglong, especially in summer. The diurnal variation of CO 2 was mainly influenced by the various vertical transport conditions of the tropospheric atmosphere in a day.

Outliers are frequent in CO2 and CH4 observations at rural sites. The aim of this paper is to establish a procedure based on the lag-1 autocorrelation to form measurement groups, some of which include outliers, and the rest include regular measurements. Once observations are classified, a second objective is to determine the number of harmonics in order to suitably describe the annual evolution of both gases. Monthly CO2 and CH4 percentiles were calculated over a six-year period. Linear trends for most of the percentiles were around 2.24 and 0.0097 ppm year−1, and the interquartile ranges of residuals calculated from detrended concentrations were 6 and 0.02 ppm for CO2 and CH4, respectively. Five concentration groups were proposed for CO2 and six were proposed for CH4 from the lag-1 autocorrelation applied to detrended observations. Monthly medians were calculated in each group, and combinations of harmonics were applied in an effort to fit the annual cycle. Finally, adding annual and semi-annual harmonics successfully described the cycle where one step was observed in the concentration decrease in spring, not only for high CO2 percentiles but also for low CH4 percentiles.
