The Determination of Anabolic Steroids by MECC, Gradient HPLC, and Capillary GC

Abstract: Methodologies are presented for the qualitative and quantitative determinations of anabolic steroids in forensic exhibits using micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MECC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary gas chromatography (GC). Analyses of representative pharmaceutical dosage forms (including a commercial aqueous suspension, a commercial tablet, several commercial oil samples and various simulated dosage units) were performed using a simple, one step quantitative extra… Show more

“…Based on these grounds, CE is an interesting new method that is highly complementary to the traditional analytical approaches. This latter aspect was shown with MECC data of anabolic steroids of forensic interest that were compared with data obtained by HPLC and GC [75]. The advantages over GC are the ability to deal with nonvolatile and thermally labile compounds whereas those over HPLC are higher efficiency and resolving power, and much reduced consumption of expensive and often toxic organic solvents.…”

“…screening these urines for misused and banned drugs. Examples studied for potential use in doping control include anabolic steroids [75], diuretics [93], ephedrine and norephedrine [94], diuretics, narcotics-analgesics and P-blockers [95]. Detection of such drugs and/ or their metabolites in routine urinary screening of athletes leads to disqualification and the implementation of disciplinary action.…”

“…In other application fields, e.g., toxicology, HPLC and CE have shown different selectivity providing "orthogonal" separations [13,14]. Thus, their use in combination greatly enhances the identification power and the analytical reliability.…”

“…Previously, Vindevogel and Sandra used a PlackettBurman statistical design to optimize the separation of four testosterone esters [8]. Lurie et al monitored the separation of 24 anabolic steroids at 3 different wavelengths [9]. In these two studies, the separations were performed in the presence of a high acetonitrile content.…”
