The Determinants of Inequality and Income Gap between Urban and Rural Areas in Cameroon: Evidence from the ECAM3 Household Survey

Abstract: This paper analyzes the determinants of income and the urban-rural income gap to highlight the urban-rural inequality problem in Cameroon. It concurrently uses the OLS regression, the conditional quantile regression as well as the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition techniques to achieve this objective. The findings of OLS estimations show that human resources and social as well as physical capital play a major role in the improvement of welfare. Household size reduces the consumption expenditures both in rural and u… Show more

“…These studies used either income or expenditure to measure the level and distribution of poverty. Most other studies also measured income inequality using Gini-coefficient techniques in different parts of the country [16][17][18]. However, there are few studies that attempted to analyze both income inequality and poverty together at national or regional level such as [5,[19][20][21] and [22].…”

“…More importantly, this technique permits to properly mirror the exact "stochastic relationship between random variables." The quantile regression model had also been previously applied by previous related welfare analysis studies such as, for instance, Fentaw and Appa (2016), Samuel (2017), Teka et al (2018). Therefore, according to Samuel (2017), the quantile regression model is specified as:…”
